Cooptel completes its work in Canton de Melbourne
Canton de Melbourne – August 2023: It is with great pride and a sense of accomplishment that the Council of the Township of Melbourne announces the installation of a fiber optic telecommunications network by Cooptel over 100% of its territory! The project was finalized on July 5.
Following the 2017 elections, the council decided to embark on a search for a way to serve the entire municipality with reliable and affordable internet service. Data from a citizen survey conducted in 2018 showed that 25% of residents surveyed did not have access to high-speed internet, and that 95% wanted to benefit from this service. In addition, residents with internet service were not satisfied with neither the service nor the cost. 100% of survey respondents supported the municipality’s initiative to find a solution for a telecommunications service offering three services: television, Internet and telephone.
The first exchanges with Cooptel took place during 2018, and on September 3, 2019, the council agreed to sign an agreement with Cooptel for the construction of a fiber optic network for all addresses in the municipality. This agreement was signed on October 25, 2019. In fact, the municipality granted a financial assistance, payable over 4 years, to Cooptel so that 100% of the 510 or so addresses would be served in order to have access to all three services.
The process of obtaining permits and authorizations was difficult and took longer than expected. The agreement was that once the engineering work was completed, construction would take around 18 to 24 months…… and then the pandemic struck! As a result of all these obstacles, completion was postponed several times. The first residents were connected during the summer 2020, and construction was completed in July 2023.
The Council of the Township of Melbourne is proud of its initiative and very satisfied with the results achieved, as well as with the professionalism and cooperation shown by Cooptel throughout the process.
